In our previous blog post, we spoke about how to use your SochCup for the very first time and all the tips and tricks that go with it. In this article, we talk about how to clean menstrual cup – SochCup by JuJu.
Q. I just got my SochCup. Can I wear it directly?
Since it’s the very first time you are using your Soch Cup, you are required to sterilize the menstrual cup to prevent any infections. If you have access to a kitchen, use the stove and boil a vessel with water. Once the water is boiling, add the Soch Cup in it for 3-5 minutes. Keep an eye out for the menstrual cup as you boil it. Make sure there is enough water. If you do not have access to a kitchen, you can use a kettle and boil it in the same for 3-5 minutes. Once the boiling is done, you can carefully take the cup out, wipe it with a piece of clean cloth and let it air dry.
Once it’s completely dry, you can store it in the pouch that the SochCup comes in. Please make sure that you do not use an airtight container. If you have lost the pouch in which the menstrual cup comes, keep it wrapped in a clean, cotton handkerchief. We recommend using 100% cotton/natural fabrics as they are more breathable as compared to polyester fabrics.
Q. I am wearing my menstrual cup now. Do I have to sterilize it every single time that I take it out?
The best thing about using the Soch Cup is that you don’t have to sterilize it every time you take it out. The reason behind this is that our vagina is a non-sterile organ. When you take out the cup to dump its contents in the sink/commode, simply wash it with plain water and reinsert.
Q. I finished using my Soch cup for this cycle. Now what? How to clean menstrual cup?
Congratulations on using your Soch Cup successfully. Now, you can rinse the cup thoroughly and air dry it. You can then keep it in your pouch. Coming to sterilization for your next menstrual cycle, you can do two things:
- Sterilize it in advance at the end of the previous cycle.
- Sterilize it a few days before your next cycle begins.
Q. Do I have to sterilize my Soch cup every single cycle?
There’s quite a bit of debate in the cup circles about this issue. Personally, I have not sterilized my cup in 2 years’ time. I simply wash it with geyser-hot water every month and make sure it’s clean and dry and I haven’t faced a single instance of infection. However, there are many women who would be uncomfortable with this idea. Therefore, the idea of constantly sterilizing your cup every cycle is something that is best chosen according to individual preferences. However, the first time you use a cup, it’s definitely necessary to sterilize it and after that you can just dip it in a glass of boiling water for 5-7 minutes.

Q. Can I wash my menstrual cup with Dettol or any other cleaning agents?
Absolutely not. Not only Soch Cup, but any product that goes near your vagina does not require to be washed by Dettol or any other cleaning agents. Plain water does the job best without disturbing the pH balance of your vagina.
Q. Can I use oil to lubricate the menstrual cup before inserting?
If you use your menstrual cup during periods, blood will act as a natural lubricant and you will most likely not need a lubricant. However, if you still feel the need then we suggest water based lubricants like aloe-vera gel or k-y jelly. Oil-based lubricants are difficult to wash off from the cup and this remaining oil attracts dust.
